BYU Continuing Education Mid-Year Check-in

As June quickly approaches, there is no better time to look back at the first half of the year and see the ways BYU Continuing Education (CE) worked to fulfill its mission of “Inspiring Lifelong Learning to Benefit the World.” Here are some of the following ways how:

In January, after the contributions of time and expertise from many individuals to ensure the accuracy and quality, a second volume of A History of BYU Continuing Education covering the years 1997–2021 was completed. This volume covers a period of rapid technological innovation with the rise of the internet and online learning, which fundamentally changed how education could be delivered. Additionally, the volume captures the growth of CE programs like BYU Evening Classes, BYU Independent Study, the Bachelor of General Studies program, and the BYU Salt Lake Center.

In February, the 2026 BYU CE Winter Workshop was held over the course of two days, from February 11 to 12. The workshop focused on the future direction of BYU CE through various presentations, networking opportunities, and employee recognitions. Key moments included a state of CE address from Dean Richard Houseman as well as other presentations on BYU’s School of Medicine, ancient scripture, goal setting, and CE’s key role in the future of BYU.  Through its training and updates, the workshop was a fruitful endeavor.

In March, after 50 years of being known as EFY, the program will now be known as BYU Expeditions. The new name is reflective of the new direction the program is headed while honoring its past. The program is not losing its focus of helping youth grow spiritually, socially, and personally through uplifting, well-structured camp experiences, which will continue to be a part of this exciting new chapter.

In April, BYU Women’s Conference held its 50th anniversary session, with this year’s theme being "May We Arise and Shine Forth as Women of Light," which comes from a quote from Sister Wendy W. Nelson, former Women’s Conference chair, in a women’s conference address she gave in 2000. The event featured keynote addresses from Sister Susan Bednar and Elder David A. Bednar, along with a wide range of speakers, 85 faith-centered sessions, and special anniversary events such as an art show and concert, all aimed at fostering faith, growth, and connection among women of all backgrounds.

In May, the BYU CE Leadership Council attended a Southern Christian Leadership Experience in Georgia and Alabama. The purpose of the trip was for the Leadership Council to learn more about the civil rights movement and its leaders as well as lessons they can learn from their examples. The experience proved to be insightful and impactful for all in attendance as they learned more about MLK Jr., Rosa Parks, the Freedom Riders, the Selma-to-Montgomery marches, and so much more.

These aforementioned examples are just a few instances of the ways BYU CE has worked to fulfill its mission, “Inspiring Lifelong Learning to Benefit the World,” this year. As the year continues, BYU CE looks forward to carrying this momentum forward throughout the remainder of the year and beyond.
