Since its inception, the BYU Student Success Center (SSC) has been dedicated to helping students achieve their academic goals by offering academic coaching, peer mentoring, peer tutoring, and online resources for students and parents. All of these services are available to students enrolled in Independent Study classes, or BYU Online High School, FlexGE, and Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) programs.
This impact is measured by the number of appointments the SSC has in a given month, with last month’s total reaching 1,840 individual meetings across academic coaching, peer mentoring, and peer tutoring services. These meetings can be held either in person or online and are designed to meet students wherever they are.
During one tutoring session last month, an SSC tutor met with a student who was clearly struggling. When the student joined the meeting, she was on the verge of tears. By the end of the meeting, after receiving some help from the tutor, the student confessed how hard things had been for them recently, but the kindness the tutor exhibited gave her something to be grateful for.
The tutor reflected: “I learned a ton from this experience and was so grateful to see how the fruits of our labors to serve God's children through our work really do work,” the tutor explained. “We have no idea what any of our students or even coworkers are going through, but when we strive to serve and love them as Christ would, they feel that! Our interactions with our students are changing lives, both theirs and our own!”
Stories like this illustrate the mission of the Student Success Center: helping students succeed academically while providing encouragement and support during life's challenges. Through thousands of interactions each year, SSC coaches, mentors, and tutors continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Continuing Education students.
