Accreditation

BYU is accredited as a Higher Educational Institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Additionally, BYU Online High School holds accreditation from two regional accreditation agencies: Cognia and the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. The online university courses offered as concurrent college credit by BYU Online High School are accredited by NWCCU.

Our accreditation sources align with and are recognized by other U.S. regional accreditation agencies. This means that credits earned through BYU Online High School are generally transferable to other universities, colleges, and secondary educational institutions.

A look back at BYU's history

Exploring the past, embracing the future.

The roots of BYU Online High School trace back to Brigham Young Academy, a small private high school founded in 1875 in Provo, Utah. Under the guidance of its founding principal, Karl G. Maeser, the academy welcomed 29 students who embarked on a journey that would eventually lead to the establishment of Brigham Young University.

In 1904, the academy split into two institutions: Brigham Young High School and Brigham Young University, with the former serving as a “laboratory” school under the College of Education. Brigham Young High School proudly conferred high school diplomas to its final graduating class in 1968. Today, BYU Online High School revives the legacy of high school education at BYU, offering students the opportunity to earn a Brigham Young high school diploma. Building upon a tradition of innovation, BYU Online High School remains steadfast in its commitment to providing educational opportunities that empower students to achieve their academic and personal aspirations.

Tried. Tested. Terrific.

The success of our students is important to us, and our students agree.
