My Brother's Keeper

Nate and Grant Gurr, brothers from Gilbert, Arizona, have always shared a special bond and a dream to do good in the world. “I remember being little and talking about how we’ve been born in a great country with the gospel. What did we do to deserve that?” Nate shares. Grant recalls the two of them wondering, “Why were we blessed with these things?” They were always grateful for what they had and felt a responsibility to do something meaningful with what they had been given. These conversations, often held late at night in their shared room, were more than just pillow talk—the two really intended to make a difference.

Today, Nate and Grant are living out their childhood dream in an extraordinary way. Both brothers have secured legal intern positions at BYU Continuing Education, a rare achievement for undergraduate students. Grant began his employment with BYU CE at the beginning of the semester, and in November, Nate applied for the position as well. “I didn’t know I would be working with [Grant], not directly,” Nate shared. But now, Nate and Grant share a desk and often work together on projects.

Grant and Nate feel that one of the best ways they can give back and influence the world for the better is through the ethical practice of law. While they may not end up in the same field of law, their employment with BYU Continuing Education has provided them with the unique opportunity to work together toward achieving their dream.

Both feel they have mutually benefited from the support and brotherly love they bring with them to the workplace. “Grant is one of my best friends,” Nate shares. “Being able to learn more together about what we’re going to be doing for our professional lives is super fun.” This close relationship has allowed them to continue motivating each other and improving together in a professional setting, just as they did growing up.

For Nate and Grant, working together at BYU Continuing Education doesn’t seem to be a coincidence; it is a fulfillment of their shared vision. “We have always felt like God wants us to do good things with the life that He has given us,” Grant says, “We feel like He wants us to take those blessings and turn outward and bless the world ... and so to be doing this side by side is really exciting.” Though a legal internship with BYU CE is far from the end goal, the Gurr brothers look to the future with excitement and determination to bless the world. BYU Continuing Education has provided Grant and Nate with an important opportunity for growth and development—a stepping stone on their way to making a difference.
