A BGS student taking Geology 101 was referred to the Student Success Center for tutoring and academic coaching. She was very depressed about her scores and the outcome of the course. Student Success began meeting regularly to work through each chapter together.
We focused on improving her study habits, such as creating effective study schedules and employing active learning techniques. Additionally, we worked on her mindset, emphasizing her potential and ability to succeed not just in Geology, but throughout her educational journey. As we continued to meet, her confidence grew, and her test scores reflected this improvement. By the end of the course, she achieved a remarkable 96% on her field guide report—an assignment that requires students to apply their geologic knowledge in advanced ways.
After passing her final exam and the course with flying colors, she expressed how she now felt like a budding geologist, confident in her ability to tackle the rest of her classes. The Student Success Center is thrilled to witness her continued success and look forward to celebrating with her when she graduates and fulfills her dream of receiving her degree!
