BYU Continuing Education is excited to announce that the BYU Student Employee of the Year award was given to Maya Langford, an FSY employee here at BYU CE.
Maya is a senior from the rural area of Sacramento, California. She looks forward to graduating in April with a degree in human development. “I’ve always found people really interesting,” Maya shared. “I enjoy getting to know people and their stories, learning why they are the way they are, and helping them grow and become better.”
After serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Maya felt that studying human development was a natural transition. Maya sees herself one day attending graduate school and pursuing a career in social work, possibly getting involved with a nonprofit organization offering counseling or other social services.
Nearly three years ago, Maya was looking for a campus job and applied for an office position with FSY. Over the last three years, Maya has excelled in her work and her responsibilities have grown. Her current job title is “project assistant,” and her primary duties include training, overseeing, and supporting student employees working on the logistics of FSY conferences, such as housing, dining, and more. “It’s a fun place to work,” Maya commented. “I get to work with a lot of different people, and I’ve learned a lot of different skills.”
Maya has constantly looked for ways in which she can contribute to the FSY program and make a difference. “I took a lot of initiatives I didn’t necessarily have to take,” Maya recounted. “I really love the job, the program, and the people. I want to make it a better experience.”
All of Maya’s hard work has not gone unnoticed; this year she was recognized as BYU Student Employee of the Year by the campus newspaper, The Daily Universe. “It was really humbling as well as validating to know that the work I have done over the last couple of years has been appreciated,” Maya explained.
Before working with FSY, Maya had a custodial job in Helaman Halls. Whether it’s overseeing a team of employees or vacuuming hallways, Maya believes that every student employee has a vital role to play. “No matter your role, there are always opportunities to grow and learn and make connections,” she remarked.
Maya believes in leaving situations better than she finds them. “As student employees, there are always opportunities. Don’t be afraid to seek out and create those opportunities,” Maya encourages. “I think that can be applied to work, school, and life in general.”
