A Unique Setting for Academic Success

Are you looking to enhance your academic experience and get ahead in your studies? The BYU Salt Lake Center just might be the answer!

Located 40 miles north of the Provo campus, the BYU Salt Lake Center provides diverse academic opportunities to propel students of all ages forward. “The BYU Salt Lake Center is for all BYU students,” says Mike Shamo, BYU Salt Lake Center Associate Director. “It provides flexibility to students in scheduling their classes.”

To accommodate students who take the Frontrunner from Provo, classes begin 15 minutes after the hour, allowing all students a chance to study at the Salt Lake Center, regardless of their transportation situation.

Rigor Meets Flexibility

How can the Salt Lake Center help BYU students get ahead? “We offer the flexibility of one-day-a-week classes,” Shamo explains. “Some students will come once a week and they’ll knock out six to nine credit hours [over a semester].”

While the flexibility provided by classes held only once a week has given rise to the myth that classes at the BYU Salt Lake Center are easier, Shamo asserts that this is not the case: “[BYU Salt Lake Center courses] are not easier, they’re more accessible. We have teachers who are very much engaged with their students and the small class size makes a huge difference. We work closely with academic departments to ensure courses have the same rigor and requirements. The departments are also responsible for hiring and training the instructors.”

Helping Students Stay on Track to Graduate

Additionally, the BYU Salt Lake Center offers classes during just the second term of fall and winter semesters, providing the unique opportunity for those returning home from missions or travel to get ahead by beginning classes without having to wait for the next semester to start.

During spring and summer terms, the BYU Salt Lake Center is filled with BYU juniors and seniors nearing graduation. The BYU Salt Lake Center helps them fulfill those last few credit requirements to graduate on time.

Expanding Opportunities for Lifelong Learning

While these advantages attract many BYU students, the BYU Salt Lake Center’s mission expands even further. Students not traditionally enrolled at BYU, such as those in the FlexGE program, visiting students, and even some students studying at Ensign College frequently take classes at the BYU Salt Lake Center. In addition, BYU employees, spouses, and children can take advantage of the newly approved Post-bacc Prep program. Designed for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree, this program allows employees and qualifying family members to take classes on campus as part of their employee benefit: continue with lifelong learning, strengthen academic skills, or prepare for advanced study. It’s a powerful way to open doors to graduate programs and new career opportunities—right here at BYU.

Technology, Support, and a Path to Success

Furthermore, the BYU Salt Lake Center houses two graduate programs: the executive master’s degrees of public administration and business administration, providing opportunities for academic growth, professional excellence, and career advancement.

The BYU Salt Lake Center is committed to providing high-quality education to each of the demographics it serves. “We’re investing in the technology to make the Salt Lake Center a laboratory of learning,” Shamo states. Consistent investment efforts are made at the BYU Salt Lake Center to ensure students have access to cutting-edge technologies and learning resources as reflected in the best offerings on BYU Provo campus. Specifically, multiple active-learning rooms and other new technologies are being incorporated to propel all BYU Salt Lake Center students to success.

“Wherever you are, you can get ahead at the BYU Salt Lake Center,” Shamo comments. Whether you’re a FlexGE student, a BGS student, a matriculated BYU student looking for more flexibility in your schedule, or even a college graduate returning to school to further your career, the BYU Salt Lake Center can help you get ahead and progress toward achieving your academic and professional goals.
